The Roman Empire's rise gets a royal treatment in this sprawling drama, which begins in 52 B.C., when Julius Caesar finally conquers Gaul, after years of war. Back in Rome, however, the Senate seeks to undermine Caesar's power, setting the stage for inevitable civil war. The HBO-BBC co-production took more than a year to make on acres of sets at Italy's legendary Cinecitta studios.
  • Not only do I think Damages ... | Matt Roush | 10/15/2007
Question: Not only do I think Damages was the best new show to air this summer, I now have to say it is the best show on television! I usually can't stand it when shows do flashbacks, then revert to real time and go back and forward again. But Damages does it so well, and that device makes its stories all the more compelling. Here's my question, though: Will Damages be back for a second season? I ask because they have killed off so many of their major players; will enough cast members be left to do a second season, and if so, what storyline could they possibly come up with next? Glenn Close's performance is out-of-the-park superb. Most times Patty is cold, calculating, vindictive, cruel (remember the doggie?) and downright nasty. (Didn't we all love it when Ellen told her off and even again last week when she declined to come back to the firm?) That makes it all the more compelling when we see even the slightest humanity or compassion from her. She is riveting. Also, I've been a fan of ... read more
  • George Lucas, Episode II: Star Wars Strikes Back — on TV | Today's News: Our Take | 9/20/2007
In Part 1 of TV Guide executive editor Steve Sonsky's in-depth Q&A with George Lucas, the discussion encompassed the Starz documentary Fog City Mavericks (premiering Monday, Sept. 24, at 9 pm/ET), Lucas' advice for aspiring filmmakers and why Sean Connery turning down Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull might be a good thing. Here in Part 2, the conversation turns to Lucas' pair of TV-bound Star Wars projects, the power of the Internet and the television series he was distraught to see go off the air.TV Guide: Can we talk about the two Star Wars television series you're working on...?George Lucas: There's Clone Wars, and we're in the middle of that. TV Guide: Tell us about it.Lucas: Well it's basically like Star Wars [in that it] takes place between, obviously, [the films] Episo read more
  • Just got back from ... | Matt Roush | 9/17/2007
Question: Just got back from Blockbuster with the free NBC-preview DVD, which includes the pilot episodes of Life, Journeyman and Chuck, as well as a two-minute trailer for Bionic Woman. I've only watched Journeyman so far but will probably watch the others before their official premiere. My questions are: Why don't the other networks do this? Although we would have probably tuned in to Journeyman anyway (my wife liked it better than I did and we are both fans of Heroes), we are looking at the others, something we may not have done without the DVD. I'd think that all of the networks would want to follow suit. Also, what did you think of Journeyman? I kind of liked the star and the concept, and it will go on the DVR list, but I did think it was a bit slow. And finally, should I read anything into the fact that this DVD only had a trailer for Bionic Woman and not the complete pilot? Answer: Each network has its own way of promoting its new shows. NBC is especially aggressive this year with ... read more
  • While I appreciate HBO's ... | Matt Roush | 9/3/2007
Question: While I appreciate HBO's programming quality, it is sometimes impossible to keep up with which season of which show is beginning when. Considering how well-received the second season of Big Love was, I find it hard to believe that we'll be waiting an entire year for another installment. Have you heard anything about when a third season may be scheduled? Answer: A little early for that, considering that we're still reeling from the cliff-hangers from last week's finale. With HBO as with much of cable, it's not easy to get a handle on confusing scheduling patterns, but given that the show was a modest success this summer and the network will need an anchor for next June, I wouldn't be surprised to find it returning a year from now. Although with no more Sopranos or Deadwood or Rome episodes on the back burner, HBO may need to use it earlier in 2008 (depending on production). The show premiered its first season in March 2006, so that's a possibility as well, I guess. It' ... read more
  • Rome Is Burning (Or at Least Its Set Was) | Today's News: Our Take | 8/11/2007
A fire tore through a section of Italy's famous Cinecitta film studios on Thursday at around 10 pm, partly destroying the set for HBO's now-defunct Rome, which was once touted by the cabler as the largest standing film set in the world. Doused overnight by firefighters, the blaze resulted in no injuries, and most of the studio complex was unaffected. A studio rep speculates to the AP that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. An investigation is ongoing. read more
