Tales of a newspaper photographer were based on the crime novels of George Harmon Coxe, which had been made into feature films in the 1930s and also a 1940s radio program. Casey, the intrepid lensman, was played first by Richard Carlyle, but was replaced in midseason by Darren McGavin (his first TV series). Jan Miner and John Gibson reprised their radio roles. Miner went on to greater fame as Palmolive pitchwoman Madge the Manicurist.
