One of the more ambitious sci-fi series, this meticulously plotted drama is set in the 23rd century on a space station where the Babylon 5 crew try to keep the peace. And what a job! Some 250,000 beings from many worlds live there. The compelling and complex saga spawned hundreds of Web sites and counted NASA engineers among its fans. And when its end came, cast member Bill Mumy invoked another cult favorite, the Grateful Dead: 'What a long, strange trip it's been.'

  • Babylon 5 Has Nine Lives | Today's News: Our Take | 4/24/2007
And it's only on number six. The cult sci-fi series continues its never-ending journey on July 31 with the release of Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, a made-for-video (video? What century is this?) movie starring the happy-to-be-employed Bruce Boxleitner, Tracy Scoggins and Peter Woodward. Set in 2271 on a spiffy Earth Alliance space station, the film follows the adventures of John Sheridan and crew as they try to keep the peace among various alien races. Hmmm, are they sure this film is set in the future? Sounds awfully current. —Reporting by Raven Snook read more

  • Not so much a question as a ... | Matt Roush | 9/26/2005
Question: Not so much a question as a comment. You wondered why people tempered their excitement with cynicism regarding Lost and the other new shows. I'll give you two reasons: The X-Files and Twin Peaks. It became almost immediately clear that as brilliant as Peaks was, none of the writers had a clue where it was going. X-Files took five years to do the same thing, which made it even more heartbreaking and maddening. For every Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which did an excellent job of creating season-long arcs) and Babylon 5 (the only show in history to  pull off a multi-year arc successfully, even if the show wasn't actually that great), there are literally hundreds of shows that start with a great premise but don't plan beyond the next two or three episodes. I truly hope the main factors in the mythology — the boy, the baby, the hatch and the Others — have been planned out and have a satisfactory conclusion, but that doesn't mean I trust it completely. After the convoluted mess that ... read more

Hurrah! In September, Guiding Light is bringing back Babylon 5 star Mary Kay Adams, who was always such splendid fun as Phillip Spaulding's Eurotrashy ex-wife, India von Halkein. The gold-digging daughter of an obscure Andorran baron, India joined Spaulding Enterprises' board of directors in the '90s after finessing Phillip out of "enough stock to make Alexandra nervous." That bit of history is enough to add fuel to juicy rumors that India will participate in upcoming Spaulding corporate intrigue.
