  • Outside the WGA West Meeting: Writers React | WGA Post-Strike Watch: News About Returning Shows | 2/10/2008
TV Guide was stationed outside the Shrine Auditorium as writers and writer-producers filtered out of Saturday night's formal presentation of the tentative deal hammered out with the AMPTP. Here is a look at some of the reactions to what transpired inside. — With reporting by Julie Haire• David Salzman (Writer, Mad TV)Can you comment on what went on in there? We made gains. [The WGA negotiators] did the best they could under the circumstances, and hopefully we'll be back to work later this week. What was the mood like?Positive and supportive, I would say.• Paul Lieberstein (Writer/"Toby," The Office)What is your take on the evening? It was 3,000 bored, thrilled writers. Why bored?Because they went over every point of the deal that was in front of us. Everyone was ecstatic that we're going back to work, and proud of our leadership... and bored that they were going over every point [in the deal]. Do you have any idea how soon The Office could go back into production?It'd... read more
  • A Winter of TV Discontent? | Roush Dispatch | 12/4/2007
Just a thought: If the strike lasts much longer, do you think CBS' Big Brother house has room for all of us? I joke, of course, but I also fear that if things don't get resolved soon, it's going to be a long, cold winter indeed for fans of good old everyday regular non-reality TV.In the last few days, we’ve seen cliff-hanger episodes of Desperate Housewives and Heroes that felt like season finales, and for all we know, that’s what they might be, if production doesn’t resume early in the new year for the back half of their seasons. For the first month of the writers’ strike, viewers didn’t feel much pain (except for fans of late-night comedy, the first casualty) because we were in a sweeps month chock-full of original episodes. Life went on as usual. That’s about to end. There are scattered episodes of many series yet to air in December, and a few leftovers for early 2008. But come the new year, the TV landscape’s going to start looking mighty... read more
  • NBC Faces Reality of Strike with More Reality | Today's News: Our Take | 11/30/2007
As the WGA strike goes on — the AMPTP's latest offer was summarily scoffed at late Thursday, with talks not resuming until Tuesday — NBC has unveiled a schedule featuring at least six hours a week of unscripted fare. American Gladiators debuts Jan. 6, then moves to a Mondays-at-8 time slot, says the Reporter. (Chuck depletes its fresh offerings after Dec. 3.) The quiz show 1 vs. 100 returns Jan. 4, airing Fridays at 8, leaving Deal or No Deal with just its Wednesday berth. And The Biggest Loser, which wraps up its current cycle Dec. 18, sprints back to prime time on Jan. 1 with a fifth season featuring couples. Those air in two-hour batches Tuesdays at 8.NBC's previously announced that The Celebrity Apprentice premieres Jan. 3, airing Thursdays at 9.For ongoing WGA strike coverage, check TVGuide.com's Strike Watch blog. read more
  • Upfront Thoughts: NBC | Hein Sight | 5/15/2007
Here's my quick take on the Fall 2007 primetime schedule that NBC announced earlier today....MONDAY8 pm Deal or No Deal9 pm Heroes10 pm JourneymanMonday has the potential to be NBC's biggest night. DOND is a game show juggernaut. Heroes will have a make or break sophomore season and Heroes: Origins better not be too gimmicky. Journeyman will try to carry the futuristic vibe of Heroes, but will fare about as well as Studio 60 did.TUESDAY8 pm The Biggest Loser9 pm Chuck10 pm Law & Order: SVUHistorically, this is the night where NBC shows go to die. The Biggest Loser has a small but loyal following. Chuck will be this season's failed attempt at government geek gone good. SVU just rolls on.WEDNESDAY8 pm Deal or No Deal9 pm The Bionic Woman10 pm LifeHey, it's another non-scripted show at 8 o'clock for NBC! DOND on Mondays and Wednesdays will wear thin. The Battlestar Galactica team is involved with The Bionic Woman, so I'll give Jamie Sommers the benefit of the doubt. Life is this... read more
  • NBC: Parsing the Peacock's Moves | Roush Dispatch | 5/14/2007
First, the good news (that we've been cheering since late last week): NBC's Hail Mary reprieve to the low-rated but critically worshipped Friday Night Lights is something to celebrate. True, the move to Fridays is a bit worrisome. Those with long memories will recall the fast fade of a similarly themed high-school football drama, Against the Grain (starring a then-unknown Ben Affleck), which aired on Fridays in 1993. Its failure was largely attributed to being scheduled on a night when much of the target audience was actually attending high-school football games. (But that was before the age of DVRs, downloads, online streaming, etc.) One upside: expectations on Fridays are significantly lower. And with a summer in which (let's hope) Emmy nominations and a presumed DVD release can help promote the show and stimulate more buzz, maybe this underdog will do OK in the long run.Next, the strangest news in all of NBC's fall announcements, the first in a week-long wave of network upfront... read more
