Charting the excavation of a porcelain and stoneware laden 15th-century Chinese junk in the South China Sea off Brunei. The hour also explores China's maritime, mercantile and manufactuing muscle during the period. Porcelain, which was produced only in China, was prized all over the world, but this ship might well have been operated by smugglers, because China's emperor had cut off trade in 1433. Why? The court believed that there was “nothing in the outside world [that] China really needed,” says narrator David Ogden Stiers.
