Season 30, Episode 4 Galileo's Battle for the Heavens
First Aired: October 29, 2002
“Galileo's Battle for the Heavens” is the Emmy-winning 2002 chronicle of Galileo's struggle to convince Roman Catholic Church authorities that Earth revolves around the sun. Why the headstrong Galileo (1564-1642) didn't succeed is explored in interviews with scientists, as well as dramatizations featuring Simon Callow as Galileo. The program is based on “Galileo's Daughter,” the 1999 bestseller by Dava Sobel, who points to a sad irony: “[Galileo] said the Bible was the word of God. He just didn't think it was a good astronomy textbook.” Liev Schreiber narrates.
