“The Adventure” (Part 9 of 10) follows jazz from 1956 to 1960. “The music,” says narrator Keith David, “was changing faster than ever.” Among the innovators: Miles Davis, saxophone “colossus” Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey and Sarah Vaughan. The period also saw the “spiritual awakening” of John Coltrane and the chordless “free jazz” of Ornette Coleman.
