Season 32, Episode 2 Carnegie Hall Opening Night 2004

First Aired: October 27, 2004

Soprano Renee Fleming, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Philadelphia Orchestra open Carnegie Hall's 114th season with an all-Richard Strauss program (taped Oct. 6, 2004): the tone poems “Don Quixote” (with Ma) and “Don Juan”; “Four Last Songs” (with Fleming). Strauss (1864-1949) wrote “very virtuosic music,” says maestro Christoph Eschenbach. “It shows off the orchestra in a wonderful way.” The descriptive---and TV-friendly---tone poems “tell real stories,” Eschenbach says. And “Four Last Songs” sum up “the essence of life.”
