Zosia Mamet: I've Struggled With an Eating Disorder Since I Was a Child
Zosia Mamet says she nearly died after struggling with an eating disorder since she was a young girl. In her column for the September issue of Glamour, Mamet, 26, opens up about her personal battle, which began after she was told at the age of 8 that she was fat, and the pressure our society places on women to look a certain way.

In her column for the September issue of Glamour, Mamet, 26, opens up about her personal battle, which began after she was told at the age of 8 that she was fat, and the pressure our society places on women to look a certain way.
"I'm not fat; I've never been fat. But ever since then, there has been a monster in my brain that tells me I am," the Girls star says. "Our culture delivers a real one-two punch. You want to control something, and then society says, 'Hey, how about controlling the way you look? Skinny is beautiful...' It's no secret that we live in a country with a warped view of beauty."
Like many people, Mamet struggled silently for years as she starved herself. "I tried to fight it alone for a long time. And I nearly died," she says.

The actress eventually sought treatment after her father, playwright David Mamet, pushed her into recovery, but admits she lost every pound she gained back in the following months because no one had helped her understand the basics of why she was abusing herself.
Today, Mamet says she's at a healthy weight and calls herself an "addict in recovery." She's also urging young men and women everywhere to help "diminish the stigma" and asks everyone to "remind one another that we're beautiful."
