Younger Boss Darren Star Reveals What's Next After That Finale Bombshell

Here's what's in store for Charles and Liza in Season 6

It may have taken five seasons, but Team Charles is finally getting its moment in the sun on Younger. That's right, Charles (Peter Hermann) and Liza (Sutton Foster) are officially official! The comedy's fifth ended with the two declaring their love for each other, pledging to give their relationship a real shot. And while they might be gearing up to take things to the next level, the episode's final moments -- in which those smiles turned to furrowed brows -- also teased a difficult road ahead.

"I think their faces just told the story of the reality they're both walking into, which is that their lives are about to get a little bit more complicated," showrunner Darren Star tells TV Guide.

Complicated is an understatement. Charles' relationship with Liza raises major questions of its appropriateness given their unbalanced power dynamic -- Charles was technically Liza's boss when their romance began, after all. While we know he's a good guy and never used his position to influence Liza's feelings, that doesn't make their dynamic any less questionable. As Quinn Tyler (Laura Benanti) pointed out in the finale, she can turn Liza lying about her age into a powerful statement on ageism. But a romance between a boss and an assistant? Not so much. In order to pursue this relationship out in the open, Charles was forced to step down as the face of Empirical. The move effectively takes him out of the company's day-to-day operations, but that doesn't mean you'll be seeing any less of him next season.

The Younger Cast Picks the Sexiest Moments So Far

"He'll be well-rooted within the show and their relationship is gonna be front and center," says Star. "We're gonna touch more on the reality of Charles and Liza's relationship [and] what that means."

But they aren't the only characters facing major drama ahead; the finale dropped a huge bombshell when Josh's (Nico Tortorella) ex-wife Claire (Anastasia Barzee) showed up at his doorstep looking very pregnant. Given that Josh only just figured out he really wanted to start a family with Liza, her timing couldn't be worse. Claire's sudden reappearance will likely send Josh's life into utter chaos next season. He'll need all the support he can get. And according to Star, Josh will likely turn to Liza, who is still very much a part of his life, even if they aren't together romantically.

"Liza is someone who's always going to be there for Josh. She's certainly gonna be there for him if he needs help with the baby," the Younger boss says.

A baby on the way leaves little time for romantic pursuits though, so while Liza might be a huge part of Josh's life, don't expect them to rekindle things anytime soon. Especially since Liza is very much involved with Charles.

"I'm not sure how aggressive Josh will be about pursuing Liza while she's in a relationship with Charles. I'm not sure that's gonna be his plan. He's got a lot of complications in his life," Star says. However, that doesn't necessarily mean Josh is completely out of the picture just yet. "Liza will be drawn into whatever's going on with Josh," teases Star.

From the sound of things, Season 6 is shaping up to be Younger's most complicated yet. However, not everyone will be drowning in personal relationship drama. With Millennial taking over as the flagship brand, Kelsey (Hilary Duff) has been promoted to publisher, making her the new Charles. Star says it will be a "big learning curve" for her, but if anyone can handle the major change, it's her. Plus, Diana (Miriam Shor) and Enzo (Chris Tardio) will continue their sweet romance (yay!), and despite quitting his job at Empirical, Zane (Charles Michael Davis) is sticking around next season (double yay!).

But as the show gets closer to revealing Liza's secret, Star admits he doesn't have an ending for the show in sight.

"We don't necessarily have an endgame mapped out. We've got such a rich world of characters and I think the ensemble is so strong. I think the endgame is when we all decide 'Hey, you know it's time to wrap this up.' But not because of an endgame of the story. We don't have a specific last season in mind right now," he says.

Younger might be getting older, but it's definitely here to stay!
