John Isner Loses Quickly at Wimbledon After Marathon Win

A day after winning an 11-hour, 5-minute match — the longest in tennis history — John Isner lost his next one at Wimbledon in just 74 minutes.
Understandably exhausted after his three-day contest with Frenchman Nicolas Mahut that ended 70-68 in the fifth set Thursday, Isner fell 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round to Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker. The match was the shortest men's bout at this year's championships so far.

After dropping the first set in 16 minutes, Isner, 25, sought treatment for his neck, but was clearly running on empty. The University of Georgia alum fired a record 112 aces against Mahut, but served zero against 21-year-old de Bakker. Isner also never reached a break point on de Bakker's serve and had 32 unforced errors to 20 winners.The match ended when Isner sprayed a forehand long on de Bakker's third match point.Afteward, Isner pulled out of his first-round doubles match with partner Sam Querrey, citing a toe injury.

ESPN analyst and U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEncroe said Isner played without skin on his toes. Isner's languid performance was hardly surprising after his marathon with Mahut that shattered tennis records left and right. Among them: the most games in a set (138) and the most games in a match (183).De Bakker will next face Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.
