What to Stream the Weekend of Jan. 18

Winter TV is truly starting to heat up, so if you're in hibernation mode like the rest of us, there's an excellent slew of picks just waiting for a weekend binge. Get your Snuggie out and get ready to battle over what to watch first. This week alone we have the highly anticipated premiere of Deadly Class, a punk rock comic adaptation about a high school that trains kids how to be assassins; the Easter egg-laden Season 2 premiere of Star Trek: Discovery; and the hilarious true crime documentary of the insanely viral Fyre Festival disaster, Fyre.

1. Deadly Class

Consider this: Deadly Class stars the same woman as To All The Boys I Loved Before. That's right, while the two projects couldn't be more different -- Deadly Class is a comic adaptation about a high school filled with teen assassins -- they both star Lana Condor, who flexes her range as Saya on Syfy's new show. A loner, a killer, a crush, and a friend... can Saya and her violent cohorts be all of those things at once? If the show follows comics canon, Deadly Class might just turn into your favorite meditation on the true value of human connection.

2. Star Trek: Discovery

After its first season became a wildly compelling entry point for a new generation of Star Trek fans, Discovery returns to CBS All Access for Season 2 with a few Easter eggs up its sleeve. Season 2 will kick off with a meeting of the Vulcan-raised minds as the Discovery comes in contact with the Enterprise. In this timeline, that means we'll get a rare look at Spock (Ethan Peck) during his first tour on the Enterprise (pre-Jim Kirk) and, more importantly, the brother-sister reunion of Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Spock that we DESERVE.

3. Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened

Never has there been a social media scam more legendary, more viral, more meme-inspiring than the slow car crash that was Fyre Festival. Netflix's new documentary Fyre details how the luxury music festival to be held in the Bahamas slowly and painfully unraveled due to Billy MacFarland's disconnect with reality, Ja Rule's inability to vet his friends as business partners, and the sponcon social media influencer sphere, which built Fyre into the definition of FOMO only to be struck down by a tweet about a cheese sandwich. It was the scam of the century and the true crime documentary of the decade. And best of all, it's insanely hilarious because most of the people who lost to Lady Luck are the trustafarians whose downfall anyone saddled with crippling student loans was rooting for all along.

P.S. Yes, there is a Hulu doc on the same subject. Yes, it features a sit-down interview, aka a barely disguised press release, with Billy MacFarland. And no, it is not the better of the two.
