What to Stream the Weekend of September 14

Come on, power through these last few days and then the weekend is all yours for a massive binge-a-thon. And this week, you're in luck if you're into poop. Or alcoholic horses. It's a weird week, OK?! Even the latest insanity from Ryan Murphy is looking relatively normal. But the good news is that the this week's two headlining picks -- American Vandal and BoJack Horseman -- are really, really good, even if they're about poop and horses.

1. American Horror Story: Apocalypse

The latest season of Ryan Murphy's nightmares is shrouded in mystery and FX didn't send screeners, so we know about as much as you do: It takes place during the end of the world and is going to be absolutely ridiculous. We also know the season is the anticipated crossover between the Murder House and Coven seasons and that most of the cast from the anthology will be back. Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours. American Horror Story: Apocalypse premieres Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 10/9c on FX, and previous seasons are now streaming on Hulu, Netflix and FX+.

2. American Vandal

The stakes of true crime aren't always dependent on the severity of the crime, but the complexity of the crime itself. A standard cut-and-dry murder with a simple motive isn't as interesting to solve as an elaborate heist of the last beer in the fridge by the person you'd least expect. So when I tell you that the subject of true-crime parody American Vandal's second season is about poop, trust us when we say the case is a real humdinger. 3. BoJack Horseman

BoJack Horseman is many things at once. It's a satirical takedown of Hollywood. It's a pun-filled cartoon with imaginative humor. But it's best when it's at its saddest and breaking down the self-destructive behavior of its title character as he succumbs to his addiction, his attitude, and his terrible upbringing. Yeah, it's funny, but it's also a beautiful look at the struggles we all go through, whether we're man or horse. Season 5 premieres Friday on Netflix.

4. The First

Beau Willimon follows up House of Cards with The First, a drama about the first manned mission to Mars. But it's really a character study about the astronauts themselves and how they deal with the things they leave behind. Don't expect a lot of action or even science; this is an art-house film about the exploration of our souls. All eight episodes begin streaming Friday, Sept. 14 on Hulu.
