Westworld Season 2 Trailer Shows a Bigger, Scarier World

Shogun World is real

On Thursday, HBO dropped the trailer for the much-anticipated second season of sci-fi drama Westworld, and much like Paul Wall, it has the internet going nuts. Fans will be analyzing every frame of this for clues until the premiere on Sunday, April 22.

The trailer, which is scored by an orchestral version of Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box," shows us more of the expansed universe that Simon Quarterman previously told TV Guide about -- specifically, the much-teased Shogun World and shots of a painted rider (Zahn McClarnon) and Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) in a sleek urban setting which appears very far from the dusty theme park of Westworld.

Season 2 will not pick up exactly where Season 1 left off, in the aftermath of now-sentient host Dolores leading a bloody robot rebellion against the park's board of directors and their guests, but will instead jump forward in time a bit. Though since the show makes liberal use of nonlinear storytelling, we'll probably get back to the revolt at some point down the line.

Westworld: Everything We Know About Season 2 So Far

When Westworld returns, the stakes will be so much higher now that the robots are free. A reckoning is coming for their human masters, and we can't wait to watch.

Westworld Season 2 premieres Sunday, April 22 at 9/8c on HBO.
