New Watchmen Trailer Is Confusing as Hell But It Still Looks Awesome

Prepare to say, "What the heck is going on?"

Prepare to say to yourself, "Uhhhh... what?" because the new Watchmen trailer is here. Set to debut on Oct. 20, Damon Lindelof's extremely Lindelof-ian take on Alan Moore's cherished graphic novel is bound to be the greatest thing you've ever seen. Or maybe the weirdest, it's kind of hard to tell from these early looks.

The show is set in the same universe as the comic, but decades later when masked vigilantes -- let's not totally call them superheroes -- are under scrutiny from the public and largely live underground, metaphorically. This new trailer gets to the heart of the series, which sees a dormant white supremacist group called the Seventh Kalvary begin to rise up again, and Regina King's character set out to stop them from starting a war.

Damon Lindelof Says His Watchmen Is a Respectful 'F-- You' to Alan Moore

In keeping with the original Watchmen's infusion of politics into the superhero world -- the Cold War and the threat of nuclear war were paramount -- Lindelof's take will look at racism, the role of the police in our world, and the deepening political divide.

That is, if you can parse all that from the many images of masks and Jeremy Irons riding on a horse.

Watchmen premieres Sunday, Oct. 20 on HBO.
