Vikings Season 6 Trailer Shows How Far Ivar Will Go for Revenge

It's the beginning of the end for the Lothbrok saga. Vikings will return for its sixth and final season with a two-hour premiere on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 9/8c on History. The deadly drama will then air eight more episodes before taking a midseason hiatus, with Vikings' final 10 episodes to air later in 2020.

"I always knew how Vikings would end and, after 89 episodes, I truly believe the saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons has been told and we are leaving our beloved fans with the proper and definitive ending they so deserve," said creator Michael Hirst in a statement. "Although it is bittersweet, there are still 20 episodes left and the most ambitious and intensely emotional episodes are still to come."

In addition to the premiere date, History also released the official trailer for Season 6, which gives viewers their first look at the consequences of Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) taking Kattegat back from Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen). The trailer confirms that the fallen king has sought refuge in Rus, where he's able to once again maneuver himself into a position of power. Teaming up with the equally maniacal Prince Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky), Ivar plots his revenge on his brothers by building up a Rus army with Oleg, who plans to invade and conquer Scandinavia.

Meanwhile, Bjorn is shown to be struggling in his new position as king, but that doesn't stop King Olaf (Steven Berkoff) from envisioning an even bigger future for him. "It is time to elect a king who will defend us. A king of all Norway. And what better man than you, Bjorn Ironside," Olaf declares.

As the fight for power builds toward another deadly (and sure to be epic) battle, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) attempts to stay out of the fold, retiring to live the peaceful life of a farmer. However, the trailer shows Lagertha is driven to pick up her shield once more for what may very well prove to be the final time.

As for what the trailer doesn't show, the fate of Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) remains unknown. But fans can rest a little bit easier knowing that Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) and Torvi (Georgia Hirst) are traveling to Iceland this season in order to discover what happened to their friend.
