Exclusive: Matt Davis Returning to The Vampire Diaries As Series Regular for Season 6
Alaric lives! Matt Davis is returning to The Vampire Diaries for Season 6 as a series regular, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively. As everyone raced to save the Other Side on Thursday's season finale, a few familiar faces, including Lexi (Arielle Kebbel) and Alaric, returned. But while Lexi was sucked up into the atmosphere with Vicki (Kayla Ewell), Alaric was left standing alongside his friends. Add new fall shows to your Watchlist now! First introduced midway through Season 1, Alaric started as a vampire hunter and history teacher at Mystic Falls High, but soon became a surrogate parent to Elena and Jeremy, and a drinking buddy to Damon. (There was also his epic dance moves when Klaus inhabited his body.) During Season 3, Original mama Esther turned Alaric into a crazy Original she could use to kill off her family, but also bound him to Elena. When Elena careened off the bridge and died in the Season 3 finale, so did Alaric.

During Season 3, Original mama Esther turned Alaric into a crazy Original she could use to kill off her family, but also bound him to Elena. When Elena careened off the bridge and died in the Season 3 finale, so did Alaric. Following his death, Alaric returned twice as a ghost in Season 4 — once when Damon visited his grave and again to, well, drink with Damon — and then in the 100th episode.
