IT'S AN UGLY DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Under pressure from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), ABC has shelved its six-part summer reality series Welcome to the Neighborhood. The show, which was slated to bow July 10, depicted seven diverse families (including African-American, Korean-American, Latino and gay) competing to win a house in an upscale Austin, Tex., cul-de-sac. Despite the show's good intentions, GLAAD says the first few episodes would have given viewers the impression that "prejudice and discrimination are not that big a deal. Regardless of how things turn out at the end of the last show, it's dangerous to let intolerance and bigotry go unchallenged for weeks at a time." ABC apparently agreed.
