The Tuesday Playlist: NBC Falls Out Of Love
Way to squander a Voice lead-in, NBC. Turns out America wasn't ready to waste another night of the broadcast week on a ridiculously padded dating show, so after this week, Ready for Love (Tuesday, 9:01/8:01c) goes into reality limbo — and honestly, if scripted duds can get yanked without notice, why should lousy competition-reality shows be exempt when shunned like this one was? On the plus side, with The Voice about to end its enjoyable "battle" rounds and move next week into the "knockout" phase, the expanded Tuesday edition will be joined April 30 by the clever supernatural thriller Grimm, given a well-deserved reprieve from the Friday trenches for the rest of the season. (Part of me wishes NBC would invest more heavily in Hannibal and give it a shot in this wide-open Tuesday time period, but Grimm is probably a better fit.) Want more TV news and reviews? COUPLES NIGHT: For CBS' top-rated NCIS franchise, it's "shipper" paradise, as the mothership (8/7c) sends Tony and Ziva to Berlin to chase Bodnar (Oded Fehr), her father's killer. ... And on NCIS: LA (9/8c), Kensi and Deeks head to Mexico in search of the missing body of a cartel kingpin. ... The night's best comedy not in repeats, MTV's Awkward (10/9c), picks up from last week's eventful opener with Jenna once again being insecure, this time about the future of her relationship with Matty.
THE REAL WORLD: TV's best documentary series, PBS' Frontline (check tvguide.com listings) takes a hard look at The Retirement Gamble, with a special focus on the pros and cons of the 401 (k). ... TV's best sports documentary series, ESPN's 30 for 30, looks back at one of the biggest days in NFL draft history: April 26, 1983, when the then-embattled sport saw a resurgence in star quarterbacks, from Elway to Marino (8/7c). ... In what sounds like a real-life Beverly Hillbillies (or, more to the point, the latest would-be clone of Duck Dynasty), Discovery's Backyard Oil (10/9c) takes a "high-stakes comical rollercoaster ride through the world of wildcat oil drilling" in south-central Kentucky. ... BIO's two-hour Citizen Hearst (8/7c) profiles the controversial newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and the media empire he created. ... MTV goes behind the scenes with a music superstar in the new docu-series Ke$sha: My Crazy Beautiful Life (11/10c). If she really wanted to raise her profile, she should have gone on The Voice.
