He's a Rocketman! Tom Hardy to Play Elton John in Biopic

Tom Hardy will star as Elton John in the upcoming biopic Rocketman, Deadline reports.

The film will chronicle the life and epic career of the singer known for "Rocket Man," "Candle in the Wind," "Your Song," "Bennie and the Jets" and a slew of other hits. John, who serves as an executive producer on the film, will even re-record many of his iconic hits for the film. Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) wrote the script, while Michael Gracey (The Muppet Man) will direct.

"Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world's most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material," said Focus Features CEO Paul Schlessel.  "We are confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton.  This, in conjunction with the creative team led by Michael and Rocket Pictures, will provide the foundation for something that will be a unique cinematic event."

Hardy, well-known for his roles in The Dark Knight Risesan Inception, will next be seen in Locke and the Mad Max reboot.

Production on Rocketman will begin in fall 2014.
