It's official, "Who is 'her'?" has replaced "How did Jack die?" as the central mystery on This Is Us. The good news is that Season 3 is still two months away from premiering and we're already getting clues about how this new question, presented by a line of dialogue from Randall in the Season 2 finale, is going to unfold.

"The mystery is actually informing a lot of stuff that has happening in the present day as well," This Is Us creator Dan Fogelmantold Entertainment Weekly. "The interesting part is in the course of the season as we mention this mystery, we're going to be putting a lot of those things in the stories that it's not. So it's not just one -- estrangement, death, love, marriage -- all those things are part of jumping a family [deep] into the future... It's about where are all the other characters at that point in their lives. And that's going to be also spoken to by what their stories are in the present day."

Basically, this is going to be another slow burning mystery, but we are going to get information throughout the season to do a process-of-elimination analysis of who this person is that Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and adult Tess were discussing in the closing scene of the Season 2 finale.

While Fogelman wouldn't elaborate more about the content of the mystery, he did confirm an important fact about when the mystery is happening. It's 15 years in the future from the present timeline and is the farthest the show will jump in the future, making it the series ending timeline.

"I don't imagine us going past this time period in the future so in terms of a timeline, this is our ending timeline," Fogelman told EW. "But we may have other past timelines we're going to introduce in the course of the series, and also other future story lines that we might introduce as well."

This is significant because Fogelman has said at multiple press events over the summer that the cast and crew have already shot pieces of the series finale. This final mystery will be bringing us closer to the end of the Pearsons' story, so be sure to pay extra attention.

This Is Us returns Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c on NBC.
