You can all relax now

This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman is assuring fans that Randall (Sterling K. Brown) won't be going anywhere -- at least not anytime soon.

The latest gut-wrenching episode featured a scene in which Randall remarks that their father Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) has been dead "longer than we had him," adding that he can't even picture himself as an old man. But Kevin (Justin Hartley) reassures his brother that he's not going anywhere. The touching scene resonated with fans who saw this as a sign that Randall might actually be killed off down the line.

"Oh my gosh I think they're going to kill off Randall," wrote user @boejuckel2. Added @Manonnad: "OMG @NBCThisisUs I CAN NOT TAKE ANOTHER CHARACTER DEATH. I swear to god if they kill off Randall, I will riot."

However, Fogelman says fans can rest easy for now because the show isn't planning to kill Randall right now.

This Is Us: Here's Our Horrible Theory About How Jack Really Dies

"I can assure everybody that we're not killing Randall this season, so everybody can relax," Fogelman explained to Entertainment Weekly. "I think they would burn my house down."

It's crucial to note that Fogelman included the phrase "this season," so he isn't making any promises about Randall surviving the duration of the series' run. However, it does seem as though that poignant conversation with Kevin wasn't foreshadowing his demise and was simply fallout from Jack's death and nothing more.

"I've experienced with a lot of friends, when you've lost a parent, particularly for whatever reason a parent of the same sex --a guy losing his father or a girl losing her mother early -- there can be a slight mortality clock that kicks in a bit earlier than it does on other people, especially since it was formative. And I think that's something Randall and Kevin feel," Fogelman said.

So there you have it: Randall isn't going anywhere this season, but we wouldn't make any bets about the future just yet.

This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
