Henry Cavill Slays Beasts in the First Trailer for Netflix's The Witcher

The Witcher is ready to fill that Game of Thrones-sized hole in your viewing schedule. Netflix has revealed the full trailer for its new fantasy series, and it's clear that fans are in for some intense fight scenes, dazzling displays of witchcraft, a lot of emotional intrigue, and, of course, monsters galore. They also revealed the official premiere date: Friday, Dec. 20.

The series stars Henry Cavill as the titular beast-slayer, Geralt, who has reservations about the problematic humans he's protecting in the Continent. Anya Chalotra also stars as Yennefer, a sorceress and love interest to Geralt, while Freya Allan plays the Princess Ciri, who becomes Geralt's protégé and whose destiny is intertwined with that of the witcher's.

Jodhi May (Queen Calanthe), Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (King Eist Tuirseach), Adam Levy (Mousesack), MyAnna Buring (Tissaia de Vries), Mimi Ndiweni (Fringilla Vigo), Therica Wilson-Read (Sabrina Flevissig), and Emma Appleton (Princess Renfri) also star.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich serves as executive producer and showrunner of The Witcher. The series is expected to remain faithful to the best-selling book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, and not the video games that are set after the events of the novels. As Hissrich told Entertainment Weekly, "There's a lot of obviously epic excitement that starts in the saga of the books. But the short stories provided a lot of world building and lay the foundation of this Continent and the politics of it and the understanding of the people of it, and those really came into focus in the first season."

The trailer is the latest look at the upcoming streaming series, following a Comic-Con preview in July.

The Witcher is expected to premiere on Netflix on Friday, Dec. 20.
