The series is billed as an "escape thriller," based on the true story of the Underground Railroad - a network of safe houses and people including whites and freed blacks that helped others escape slavery into Northern states and Canada where slavery was illegal. In the show, a blacksmith covertly organizes a daring plan to escape his plantation dodging risks and obstacles along the way.
