The Vampire Diaries: Yep, Nina Dobrev Returned for the Finale — Sort Of

This was not the Delena reunion we expected

Rumors have been swirling for months that former Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev would return for the Season 7 finale. So did Elena Gilbert make her triumphant return and reunite with her OTP Damon (Ian Somerhalder)?

Yes and no.

TVGuide.com has confirmed that Dobrev recorded brand-new dialogue for the finale in which Elena's voice pleads for Damon's help. "I'm so alone. I need you," she begs.

But it turns out the voice Damon hears isn't Elena. It's actually the evil creature that's lurking in the Armory's vault who somehow used Elena's voice to lure Damon into a trap.

And don't assume that Dobrev lending her voice to the Season 7 finale implies she'll return in a larger part next season. According to executive producer Brian Young, the fact that Bonnie (Kat Graham) was given Rayna's life doesn't change her bond with Elena -- meaning that Elena can still only return if Bonnie dies.
