The Originals threw us all for a loop by revealing that Hayley's (Phoebe Tonkin) new boyfriend, Declan (Torrance Coombs), had deeper ties to New Orleans than we thought. It turns out, he's actually Cami O'Connell's (Leah Pipes) cousin!

That Irish accent should have been a dead giveaway, now that we think of it...

His ties to Cami aren't just for show, though. According to consulting producer Jeffrey Lieber, Declan's family tree is going to play a part in the final fate of New Orleans.

The Originals Stars React to That "Tremendously Upsetting" Death

"It has significance with the resolution at the end of the season and sort of who New Orleans belongs to really," Lieber tells TV Guide. "Throughout the back half of the episodes, we do spend a lot of time browsing around the long mythology of both this show and its predecessor. There's lot of things in the [final] episodes, where we hit upon things from the earlier seasons of The Originals and from stuff that came out of The Vampire Diaries. We start to spelunk around that a lot."

Season 5 has reintroduced the concept of warring factions in New Orleans (vampire, werewolf, witch and human), and if you'll recall back to Season 1, Cami's uncle, Kieran (Todd Stashwick), used to be the head of the human faction. If Declan takes up his family's mantle, he could end up vying for power in the city.

The Originals airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on The CW.
