Jeff Daniels: The Newsroom Has Been Renewed

The Newsroom has been renewed for a third season, star Jeff Danielssays.

"It's official. #Newsroom coming back for a Season 3," Daniels tweeted on Tuesday. An email to HBO was not immediately returned. 

Back in July, HBO's President of Programming Michael Lombardo told reporters at the Television Critics Association's fall TV previews that "the odds are excellent" regarding a renewal. "We're very happy with the show," he added. "Honestly the conversations with Aaron this point are all about schedule. I would be shocked if you weren't hearing an announcement soon... We're enormously happy with Newsroom."

The Aaron Sorkin-written drama takes a behind-the-scenes look at the workings of a fictional cable news network. The Season 2 premiere was up 4 percent from the series premiere with 2.2 million viewers. Daniels also received his first Emmy nomination with the recent nod for Best Actor in a television drama series.

The news of the renewal came on the same day that HBO announced that hit series True Blood was coming to an end next year.
