[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Thursday's episode of The Good Place, "Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy." Read at your own risk!]

The Soul Squad just can't catch a break. Thursday's episode of The Good Place unmasked another Bad Place spy trying to sabotage their experiment -- but while Michael (Ted Danson) was the most obvious suspect, the actual double agent was so well placed that only Jason (Manny Jacinto), Our Resident Genius, could figure it out. (I hope Michael regrets not having anything nice to say about Jason in his team pep talk a few weeks ago. Name one person who's been a bigger help this season! Get this boy a new motorcycle, please.)

The real mole in the group turns out to be Janet (D'Arcy Carden), who was actually Bad Janet in disguise. The switch happened at the end of the Season 4 premiere as Hot Demon Chris (Luke Guldan), aka Not Linda (still miss you, Linda!), was loaded onto the train back to the Bad Place. Both Michael and Janet put him on the train, and we already knew about the fake Michael suit, so the pieces were all there for a big "that's not Michael" twist. The suit even got a spotlight in the premiere's Previously On montage. But in retrospect, the hints were everywhere that Janet was up to something shady. Over the past few weeks, she...

- Killed Bad Place demon Glenn (Josh Siegal)
- Broke up with Jason
- Told Jason, unprovoked!, that the Jaguars cut Blake Bortles
- Told Tahani (Jameela Jamil) to punch John (Brandon Scott Jones) when Tahani was trying to help him
- Started the plot to have Eleanor (Kristen Bell) replaced as leader
- Wasn't into Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

And she would have made Tahani get an asymmetrical haircut, too, if it weren't for those meddling kids.

Bad Janet's scheme fell apart in this week's episode, "Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy," after Glenn showed up from the Bad Place to tell Eleanor that Michael was actually Vicky (Tiya Sircar) in the Michael suit. (He could have been trying to misdirect her in order to start trouble, but he said he was having a crisis of conscience because he was no longer sure he could trust all the people in the Bad Place are evil, and I believe him. Start that revolution, Michael!) Michael insisted that he really is Michael. What followed was basically your classic Two Spider-Men Pointing at Each Other meme, but with one 6,000-foot-tall fire squid.

Eleanor wanted to trust her friend, but she found it hard after Michael admitted that he knew about the suit. You'll recall that Shawn (Marc Evan Jackson) called him near the end of Season 3 to taunt him with the suit, which freaked him out so much that Eleanor had to take charge. He then lied about that two episodes ago when he tried to boost her confidence by telling her he'd faked the freakout so she would step up -- which, again, didn't help his case.

He could have proven himself by taking off his Michael suit to reveal the demon underneath, but it would ruin the experiment; the humans would probably notice a 6,000-foot-tall fire squid. More than that, Eleanor and company would never look at him the same way again. Ted Danson was the perfect mix of comic-pathetic and earnest as Michael described how he looks: "I'm on fire and my neck is long. And there's a smell and lots of juice. There's so much juice, Eleanor." Jason thinks that's dope.

Janet, secretly scheming, created a "demon lie detector" that "accidentally" turned Glenn into goo. He's basically dead, temporarily. Out of options, Eleanor decided to call the Judge (Maya Rudolph) and restart the experiment. It didn't hurt that she was fresh off a sweet late-night nacho hang with Chidi (William Jackson Harper) and she'd get him back if they just started over. Or so she said. Would they even be able to bring back his memory? And if yes, what timeline(s) would he remember?

In any case, Michael insisted that keeping Chidi in the experiment is the best chance they have, so he volunteered to turn himself into goo so Eleanor could keep moving without worrying about whether she could trust him -- which was just what she needed to trust that he's actually Michael. Meanwhile, Jason, who, again, is a secret genius and deserves more respect, slapped some magnet handcuffs on Janet, who turned back into Bad Janet. The dead giveaway? She didn't correct him when he called her a girl.

Next week, Jason and Michael are going undercover in the Bad Place to get the real Janet back, and Jason is going to look so good doing it the internet will never recover. Hang tight, chili babies.

Best lines of the night:

Michael: "Do you really want to be friends with something like that?"
Jason: "Yes, I KEEP SAYING!"

Michael: "I wish I were saying this in different circumstances, but take it sleazy."

Michael (on the stages of demon growth): "Larva, slug monster, spooky little girl, teenage boy, giant ball of tongues, social media CEO, and then finally demon."

Jason: "If you're a devil how come you're not wearing Prada?"

The Good Place airs Thursdays at 9/8c on NBC.
