Get ready to head back to The Boondocks. Aaron McGruder's Peabody Award-winning satirical animated comedy is getting revived for the upcoming streaming service HBO Max, WarnerMedia announced Wednesday. Two seasons have been ordered for a total of 24 new episodes and the revival will launch with a 50-minute special in fall 2020. Additionally, all 55 episodes of the original version of The Boondocks will be available on HBO Max when the service launches in spring 2020.

The Boondocks, based on a comic strip by creator Aaron McGruder, originally aired intermittently from 2005 to 2014 on Adult Swim. It dealt with social issues from McGruder's provocative point of view. The new edition will "follow the adventures of self-proclaimed 'Civil Rights Legend' Robert 'Granddad' Freeman, and his two rambunctious grandsons Huey and Riley," according to HBO Max. "The family has recently moved to an idyllic community in suburban Maryland only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime. Life under Ruckus turns out to be an everyday struggle to survive."

McGruder was not involved in the show's fourth and final season, so the revival will be a "reimagining" based on his current vision. "There's a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today," the creator and executive producer said in a statement. "It's crazy how different the times we live in are now - both politically and culturally - more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There's a lot to say and it should be fun."

No word yet on whether Oscar and Emmy winner Regina King will return to voice Huey and Riley, but John Witherspoon previously confirmed he would return as Granddad.

The Boondocks will return in fall 2020. It's currently available to stream on Hulu.
