Supergirlis adding to its Season 2 roster by casting The Family's Floriana Lima, who will play DC Comics character Maggie Sawyer in a series regular role, TVGuide.com has learned. The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

In DC Comics lore, Sawyer is a gay cop from Star City (the home of Green Arrow) working for police units in Gotham (the home of Batman) and Metropolis (the home of Superman), and is involved in a romantic relationship with Batwoman. The addition of Sawyer will add to the ever growing slate of LGBQT heroes in producer Greg Berlanti's "Arrowverse," including Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) on DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum) and Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law) on Arrowand Captain Singh (Patrick Sabongui) on The Flash. As for Supergirl itself, the casting marks the first LGBQT character to enter the show as a regular.

Before this, the only other TV portrayal of Sawyer took place on Superman prequel series Smallville, where the character was portrayed by Jill Teed.

Supergirl has found its Superman.

Lima most recently appeared in ABC's The Family and NBC's Allegiance. She was also a regular on Fox's The Mob Doctor.

After a season on CBS, Supergirl will be moving to The CW for Season 2, which will premiere on Monday, Oct. 10 at 8/7c.
