Spike has given a series order to a television adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist, Deadline reports.

The network originally gave The Mist a pilot order in February, but decided to green-light the series after just hearing the pitch and reading the script. This means The Mist will likely be the first original scripted series for Spike in nearly a decade, now that the network put Red Mars on hold after the showrunner's departure.

King first published The Mist, a novella about a town enveloped in a monstrous mist, in 1980. It was later adapted into the 2007 film starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Melissa McBride and Laurie Holden.

The Mist series is written and executive-produced by Christian Torpe, who created the Danish hit Rita. The 10-episode first season will premiere in 2017.
