Star Trek Beyond easily cruised to the top spot in the weekend box office, taking home $59.6 million in its opening weekend. The third film in the rebooted franchise arrived in time for the series' 50th anniversary -- as well as news about a new (unrelated) TV series, announced during Comic-Con -- and introduced a new villain, Krall (Idris Elba). While the haul does reflect a bit of a slowdown for the brand (the 2009 incarnation earned $75.2 million, while the sequel Star Trek Into Darkness took $70.2 million in 2013) this year's score is still a feat in relation to competitors. The best shows of 2016 so farThe Secret Life of Pets came in second with $29.3 million, making for a three-week sum of $260.7 million. Ghostbusters fell 53% in its second weekend, tying with Lights Out, an indie horror film, in earning $21.6 million to fill the third and fourth slots. Though the drop in receipts isn't large by blockbuster movie standards, it is the most for a Paul Feig comedy -- not a great sign for the ghost bustin' franchise's future.Ice Age: Collision Course came in last with $21 million.
