The child stars of Slumdog Millionaire didn't make it to Los Angeles for the SAG Awards, where the cast won best ensemble, but the young actors will definitely be at the Kodak Theater Sunday for the Oscars.
"Everybody is really excited about it," said James Finn of Fox Searchlight Pictures. "It's nice the whole gang will be together."
All nine actors who portrayed the three main characters in three stages of their lives will be at the ceremony, Finn said. Slumdog, set in the slums of Mumbai, is the heavy favorite to take best picture.
Until now, only Dev Patel, 18, and Freida Pinto, 24, have made the awards rounds. Finn said securing visas and passports in India is difficult because many impoverished Indians don't have the mandatory identification documents.
Among the nine stars are Mumbai residents Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, and Rubina Ali, 9, two non-actors who were selected by director Danny Boyle to appear in the film. The trip to Los Angeles will be their first on an airplane and out of the country.
"I'm very happy that I'm going to the Oscars," Rubina said in her home Friday, prior to departing. "My friends are saying, 'Your fate is so good.' ... I'm not scared. I'm going to go and take a lot of pictures and show them to people over here."
