Sharp Objects Will Not Get a Season 2... Probably

HBO learned its lesson with Big Little Lies

If you were hoping for HBO's thrilling limited series, Sharp Objects, to get the Big Little Liestreatment and snag a Season 2 renewal, think again.

Sharp Objects executive producer Marti Noxon told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that there would be no second season or continuation of the series, since there was never any plan to make more episodes. "I will [answer this] because we're not talking about a Season 2. This is it. So bask in it while you can," Noxon said.

That sentiment was reiterated by HBO president of programming Casey Bloys in an interview with Deadline. "Unlike Big Little Lies where all of the stars wanted to come back, Sharp Objects, it's a very dark character, very dark material. Amy doesn't want to live in this character again and I can't blame her, it's a lot to take on for an actress... So no plans for a second season. We are very happy with this living as a limited series."

Sharp Objects' Chris Messina Confirms the Sweat Is Real

Now, it's worth noting that the cast and creators of Big Little Lies, which was also billed as a limited series, did this same song and dance during and directly after their first season run. Their tone changed after the wild success of the show both with its audience and with awards voters. If HBO suddenly goes back on this hard no response to a Season 2 after Sharp Objects runs away with awards, we'll have to reevaluate whether or not Bloys is a dirty, rotten liar.

Sharp Objects airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO.
