Sean Penn has one message for people who were offended by his green card joke at the Oscars: lighten up.

Penn told reporters over the weekend that he has "absolutely no apologies" for commenting, "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?" when presenting the award for Best Picture to Birdman, which was directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Inarritu. (The actor and director worked together on the film 21 Grams.)

"I'm always surprised by flagrant stupidity. I keep having more hope," Penn said during a promotional stop for his new film The Gunman, according to The Associated Press.

"I have absolutely no apologies," he added. "In fact, I have a big f--- you for anybody who is so stupid not to have gotten the irony when you've got a country that is so xenophobic. If they had their way, you wouldn't have great filmmakers like Alejandro working in this country. Thank God we do."

Iñárritu himself has said he wasn't offended by the joke.

"I found it hilarious," Iñárritu said after the ceremony, according to the AP. "Sean and I have that kind of brutal (relationship) where only true friendship can survive."

Do you think Penn should apologize for his remark?
