Sara Bareilles to Play Mary Magdalene in NBC's Live Jesus Christ Superstar

"Brave" singer and Waitress on Broadway writer and star Sara Bareilles has been chosen to play Mary Magdalene in NBC's live Easter Sunday staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's classic musicalJesus Christ Superstar, Deadline reports.

Bareilles will join previously announced cast members John Legend as Jesus and Alice Cooper as King Herod.

"We're overjoyed to have Sara Bareilles play Mary Magdalene and I can guarantee that her interpretation of the standard 'I Don't Know How to Love Him' will become an instant classic," said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt. "I was lucky enough to see Sara in 'Waitress' and she gave as moving and as beautifully sung a performance as I've seen on a Broadway stage in a long time."

Jesus Christ Superstar will air live from the Marcy Armory in Brooklyn on Sunday, April 1.
