Robin Thicke and Paula Patton are separating, People reports.

"We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time," the couple told the magazine.

Thicke, 36, and Patton, high school sweethearts, married in 2005 and have a 3-year-old son, Julian. Although Thicke took some heat for his scandalous performance with Miley Cyrus at the 2013 Video Music Awards, his wife defended him.

"Honestly, they rehearsed for three days beforehand, and I don't know how not to dance with someone having their booty in you... all my friends do it like that," Patton, 38, said on Watch What Happens: Live last year. "And I don't really know what the big deal is."
