If you had to choose between doing lights for your high school musical or reconnecting with your estranged mother, what would you choose?

That's the big question for Masshous (Rarmian Newton) in Tuesday's penultimate episode of Rise. While it might seem like a no-brainer for some, it's actually a much more complicated situation for Masshous.

The Evolution of Jason Katims: From Friday Night Lights to Rise

After ingratiating himself into the Mazzuchelli household, the announcement that his mom is out of prison and wants a shot at having custody of Masshous again is a shocking one for the young man. Of course he wants to get to know the woman who gave birth to him better, but moving in with her means giving up the stability he just found. She also lives in a completely different school district which means that Masshous would not only have to leave the Mazzuchelli house, but start over at a completely different high school.

The extra sad part is that Masshous may not have a choice in the matter at all. He's still a minor which means he gets to vote on who he lives with, but he doesn't have final say. Spring Awakening could lose one of its best assets because of this, and the Mazzuchellis could lose a new member of their family.

Rise airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
