Rihanna's family members are relieved Chris Brown has been charged with two felonies in the domestic violence case involving the 21-year-old pop star, and they want to see him go to jail.
"I was annoyed. I never hit my daughter," Ronald Fenty, Rihanna's father, told People. "Why should he hit her? Why would any one do that? I was crazy, but I don't know the situation and I wasn't there."
Hours after Brown was charged Thursday with assault and making criminal threats, his arraignment was postponed until next month. Brown, who is free on $50,000 bail, was ordered not to harass, threaten or harm anyone. He could face up to four years and eight months in prison if convicted. Neither Brown nor his attorney commented after the hearing.
The 19-year-old R&B singer spent the evening at a hotel bar with his bodyguards. TMZ caught his leaving the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills around 3:45 a.m.
Donald Etra, Rihanna's attorney, identified the Barbados-born singer as the woman who accused Brown of beating her in the early hours of Feb. 8. Rihanna did not appear in court, but Etra said the Grammy winner did not request a protective order against Brown.
Rihanna and Brown reportedly reunited over the weekend in Miami, much to the dismay of her relatives. "He should be in jail. He deserves whatever he gets," another relative told People.
Etra would not say whether the two have reconciled or whether Rihanna will testify against Brown. "I'm not here to discuss the relationship," he said after Thursday's hearing.
Fenty, who had said earlier in the week he supported his daughter if she chose to reconcile with Brown, also revealed to Us that the family has lost contact with Rihanna as of late. "Her mother can't get on to her, her brother told me she changed her email," he said. "Somebody has a stranglehold on her. I'm lost."
