The third time's the charm for Pyeongchang, South Korea: The city was awarded the 2018 Winter Olympics Wednesday after two unsuccessful bids.
Pyeongchang defeated Munich and Annecy, France, after only one round of voting at the International Olympic Committee session in Durban, South Africa. It's the first time a city has obtained a majority vote in the first round in a race with more than two finalists since 1995, when Salt Lake City won the 2002 Winter Olympics.

NBC retains rights to Olympics

Pyeongchang previously bid for the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games, losing by three and four votes, respectively.This will be South Korea's first time hosting a Winter Games; the 1988 Summer Games were staged in Seoul. Two Winter Games have been held in Asia, both in Japan: the 1972 Sapporo Games and 1998 Nagano Games.The Pyeongchang Games begin Feb. 9, 2018. Last month, NBC retained the rights to the Olympics through 2020.
