Pretty Little Liars Spin-Off The Perfectionists Won't Be All Girls

Who says boys can't be perfectionists?

It seems like every little detail of the Pretty Little Liarsspin-off, The Perfectionists, is being kept under lock and key by Freeform, but I. Marlene King may have just given us all a big clue about it. PLL's Alison (Sasha Pieterse) and Mona (Janel Parrish) will be headlining this new act, but don't expect them to form a girls-only group in this new series.

"I felt like just as we were getting sort of into Season 5 and 6 of Pretty Little Liars, our guys became such an important part of the show," King recently told Entertainment Tonight. "I wanted to explore the relationship between guys and girls who can be friends and not necessarily boyfriend-girlfriend."

It's definitely true that it didn't take the PLL boys long to worm their way into the hearts of fans everywhere, and by the end of show, we were all invested in their happily ever afters just as much as the girls'. They certainly ended up getting terrorized by the various A's enough to warrant it!

Taking on a new strategy with The Perfectionists to write male characters as more than just love interests is definitely a step in a more mature direction for the spin-off. Not only do we get to see men and women being supportive friends with no romantic or sexual strings attached -- a seriously under-represented dynamic by anyone's standards -- this also creates the opportunity for male viewers to check out The Perfectionists without so much "but that's a girl show" stigma attached.

As far as PLL cameos go though, don't get your hopes up too high. There's potential for Emily (Shay Mitchell) to appear on occasion as Alison's wife, but the show is still too early in development for King to reveal any other drop-ins.

"The fun of a spinoff is getting to take a couple characters from your show and creating this new experience for them, but you can't take everyone," King says. "It's bittersweet in some ways, but I think also awesome in others and I think our fans will appreciate the journey that these two characters, Mona and Alison from our world, are going into this new world."
