Netflix's Latest German Import Perfume Looks Darker Than Dark

Last December, Netflix had an unexpected hit with the German time travel mystery series Dark. Season 2 won't be ready in time to fill that slot again this winter, so Netflix is hoping another German import will satisfy your holiday-week craving for downcast Teutonic mystery. Friday, Dec. 21 will see the release of Perfume, a six-episode murder mystery about people who make fragrance from human glands.

The series tells the story of a criminal profiler (The Reader's Friederike Becht) investigating a series of brutal murders that trace back to a group of boarding school kids who experimented with psychologically manipulating people using human scents. It's inspired by Patrick Suskind's 1985 historical horror novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, which was adapted into a film in 2006, but it's not exactly an adaptation. In fact, the trailer shows that the present-day murders were inspired by the novel, in which a young man with an incredible sense of smell is murderously obsessed with creating a perfume that will make people fall in love.

Perfume arrives on Netflix Friday, Dec. 21.
