Californication chronicles the journey of a tortured one-hit wonder novelist, Hank Moody ( David Duchovny), who left New York to see his book turned into a movie and ended up losing his soul and his family in the process. Pamela Adlon plays Marcy Runkle, wife of Hank's best friend Charlie ( Evan Handler), who is getting caught up in a world of trouble this season. We sat down with Pamela to talk about what it's like making out with Evan Handler, how she feels about her sex scenes and what's in store for Marcy in Season 2. - Erin Fox TVGuide.com: We're huge fans of Californication the first new episode is called "Slip of the Tongue," right?
Pamela Adlon:
Wait, what happens in this one? We go to a party? TVGuide.com: Yes, you go to a record producer's party. Hank and Karen are getting frisky in one of the rooms, then Hank leaves I don't want to give it all away, but when he comes back he does something really naughty to the wrong chick.
Adlon:
Oh my god, that's right! And do I snort coke off the Colombian map? TVGuide.com: You sure do!
Adlon:
And then don't I make out with Evan [Handler]? TVGuide.com: Yes! You totally slipped him some tongue.
Adlon:
Ew! I know, when I had to do ADR [Post production voiceovers], I was like, "EW, Oh my god!" I'm such a good actress I use my whole body. TVGuide.com: I just re-watched the finale from Season 1 and you totally stole the show. Can you tell me about filming that scene before the wedding when you and Karen are smoking a joint?
Adlon:
We had such a great time filming that scene, and we really thought about it before hand. Natascha [McElhone, who plays Karen] is so amazing because when you work with women actors, so often they're agenda-based for their own benefit. She was like, "Let's go inside, and let's do this right." So we went up stairs in this crazy house where they used to teach acting classes to Marilyn Monroe on the cliffs over Malibu. And we were sneaking a cigarette out the window, and [Natascha] was like, "We should do this in the scene." So we ended up bringing the director up and asking if we could do it in that room instead with the window open. It was beautiful, it worked out so well. TVGuide.com: When you read the script, did you know you had to be a part of this show?
Adlon:
When I first got the script, Tom Kapinos wanted me to read for Karen. I was like, "No! No sir, that's not gonna happen." So they just offered me the role of Marcy which was a small scene in the pilot. I read it and it was so dark, I didn't even get that it was a comedy until they started promoting it on Showtime as their new comedy. I was like, "It's a comedy? What the f---? It was so dark, but it was so good; it was like the best writing I'd ever read. So with Marcy, that happened organically because he writes for the people that he has so he was just giving me this big present of writing these great things for me. TVGuide.com: Was it strange or uncomfortable to do the sexy scenes with "Dani" the naughty secretary?
Adlon:
No, not at all, she's so great. All the women gosh I love them all they're so wonderful. And that's rare! TVGuide.com: Well, you've had a rough year. How did you deal with the loss of Natascha's husband as a cast and crew?
Adlon:
Oh god it was a horrible shock. Martin [Kelly, Natascha's husband] had just been [in L.A.] four days before it was something that, no one knew what to do. So, the crew and cast just banned together like you've never seen. And Natascha I've never seen a person handle a nightmare so elegantly and she's an extraordinary person. We basically had to shoot her out for two days and we were all zombies. She went home, then came back and went home again - all while she's pregnant. I still can't believe it. The whole summer was about that for me because I have three kids and Natascha and I are very close. TVGuide.com: Did you cling to your husband and say, "Don't ever leave me"?
Adlon:
Ugh not really. (Laughs) But really, she was extraordinary, and when you have good work to do, it can be your savior. TVGuide.com: So, this season, what will Marcy's journey be?
Adlon:
I think she goes a little down the drug toilet drain. TVGuide.com: So will we see Marcy in rehab?
Adlon:
I don't want to ruin it she will get into some shenanigans. TVGuide.com: I heard Charlie may leave her
Adlon:
Well, there's a situation that arises we take in someone. We get involved in the porn industry because of this person we take into our house and because of our money situation because I snort all our money up my nose. TVGuide.com: Now, do you have to do any crazy sex scenes this season?
Adlon:
I did a couple of things where I was like, "OK, my daughter is starting middle school - is this going to come up?" I was like, "Look, if anyone says anything to you about Mama's show, I just want you to know that I'm incredibly proud of it, and that it's nothing to be embarrassed about and know that it's not meant for [kids]. They shouldn't be watching it - it's a grown up show." Watch these Californication Video Q&As: " Madeleine Martin (Becca)
