Outlander: Is Something Terrible Going to Happen to Jamie and Claire?

Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) trained their ragtag army of Scottish highlanders for battle against the British in Saturday's Outlanderepisode, but fans better batten down the hatches: the smoother the sail is now, the rougher the waters will get later.

To be clear, the episode wasn't drama free. The preparations triggered Claire's WWII PTSD and Jamie was confronted with how difficult it is to be a leader.

Yet they were both able to put what they learned in Paris to good use and remembered to trust and communicate with each other. Claire was able to overcome her PTSD; Jamie was able to sabotage a British camp because he and Claire were able to manipulate their location out of a wayward soldier.

The couple marched their army to the Bonnie Prince Charles (Andrew Gower) feeling on top of the world, which is what has us worried. Defeating the British Army won't be easy, but the show's current outpouring of optimism would make you think it's at least possible. Don't let the change of fortune fool you -- the Frasers are still marching towards tragedy.

This is exactly why Outlander is one of the smartest dramas on television, by the way. It isn't shocking fans through the season but rather building tension and preparing its viewers for big moments that will have a lasting emotional impact.

After the return of Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) in Paris and the loss of their daughter, Jamie and Claire needed to find their way back to each other. The audience was granted a moment to breathe and the ability recoup from the trauma of the first half of the season. More swordfighting and scheming and less tears, please and thank you.

We're grateful for the good news, but, word to the wise: you should get ready for an inevitable emotional gut punch.
