Once Upon a Time in Wonderlandhas gotten off to a rocky start, but the Oncespin-off surprised viewers by revealing that the Red Queen (Emma Rigby) was actually the Knave's (Michael Socha) former love from another world.

"I was really surprised!" Socha says of the big twist. "Being in Wonderland, anything can happen. All of us are always really excited to read the scripts, and when that little plot came through, I was genuinely shocked."

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland's Sophie Lowe: Alice will stop at nothing to get Cyrus back

Co-star Sophie Lowe, who plays Alice, says it was particularly difficult keeping the Queen's real identity a secret after viewers started getting very vocal about Rigby's character online. "In the first two episodes, everyone was hating on the Red Queen, but I knew this secret about her and the Knave," she says. "It was hard to not reveal that and let people see a little bit of a good side. I'm so happy that it got revealed. People were really shocked by it."

It won't be long before Alice herself discovers the truth about her traveling companion's former flame, which Lowe says will be a big shock. But Alice will have bigger problems to deal with since Jafar (Naveen Andrews) will stop at nothing to get Alice to use her three precious wishes. Jafar will set his sights on those closest to Alice, starting with the Knave. "The Knave and I have to work together to save each other again," Lowe teases of Thursday's episode, in which the Knave could lose his head over his alliance with Alice.

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland takes Alice down the rabbit hole again

"He might not even get saved," Socha teases, hinting that even the Knave's former love may not be able to stop Jafar. "Anastasia and Will were lovers, but the Queen and the Knave are different people now," he says. "The Queen ain't one for saving."

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland airs Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
