We Finally Know What Happened to Olivia on On My Block

[Warning: The following contains spoilers for the season premiere of One My Block Season 2.]

Netflix's On My Block, a coming-of-age dramedy about black and Latinx teens growing up in a rough neighborhood of Los Angeles, seemingly came out of nowhere to become one of the best shows of 2018. Now the show, which was co-created by Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft (All Eyez On Me) and Lauren Iungerich (Awkward), is back for its anticipated second season. And thank god it is, because we finally have a resolution to the shocking cliffhanger that closed out Season 1, which saw a rival gang member crash Olivia's (Ronni Hawk) quinceañera in an attempt to kill Cesar (Diego Tinoco) only to end up shooting Olivia and Ruby (Jason Genao) instead.

We already knew, thanks to the Season 2 trailer, that Ruby survived, but Olivia's fate was left up in the air. Since she was nowhere to be seen in the trailer, we naturally assumed the worst, and sadly, now we know she wasn't as lucky as Ruby. The new season picks up shortly after Ruby's release from the hospital, and he is, quite understandably, struggling in the wake of Olivia's death. The unopened gift Ruby got Olivia for her quinceañera, which we eventually learn was a dictionary because of course it was, is a constant reminder throughout the half-hour episode that Olivia's life was cut too short.

Olivia's untimely death at the hands of senseless violence also helps to drive home the serious threats that regularly hang over the show, which is skillfully balanced by its well-placed sense of humor. But the season's opening scene, which travels through the community and reveals just how many memorials exist for the people who've been lost, is definitely one that sticks with you.

And that feeling isn't likely to go away. It's safe to say Olivia's absence is felt throughout not just the Season 2 premiere, which is set on New Year's Eve, but also the entire second season as the group attempts to move on from the devastating events that occurred that fateful night.
