Olympics: Canada Shuts Out U.S. in Men's Hockey Semi; Mikaela Shiffrin Skis into History Books

A day after the U.S. women's devastating loss to Canada in the Olympic gold-medal hockey game, the American men lost its semifinal bout against its Northern neighbor.

In a rematch of the Vancouver overtime gold-medal contest, Canada prevailed Friday 1-0 with Jamie Benn's goal in the second period, while goalie Carey Price made 31 saves. They will play Sweden, which beat Finland 2-1, in the final for the chance to win its first hockey gold outside of North America since 1952. The U.S., which suffered its first loss in Sochi, will play Finland for the bronze on Saturday.In better news for the red, white and blue, 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin, the slalom world champion, met expectations to take gold in the two-run event in 1:44.54. She is the youngest woman to win the Olympic slalom and the first American to do since Barbara Cochran in 1972. Austrians Marlies Schild and Kathrin Zettel were 0.53 and 0.81 behind, respectively.

After a woeful performance by both its long track and short track teams, the U.S. finally won a speed skating medal: silver in the men's 5,000 short track relay (6:42.371) behind Russia, which set an Olympic record (6:42.100), and ahead of China (6:48.341). The Russian team included Viktor Ahn, who earlier in the day won the 500 meters (41.312) over Wu Dajing of China (41.416) and Charle Cournoyer (41.617). Ahn has won three golds, along with a bronze, in Sochi and has six career Olympic golds now.South Korea's Park Seung-Hi won the women's 1,000 meters short track event in 1:30.761, with teammate Shim Suk-Hee third (1:31.027). China's Fan Kexin was second (1:30.811).In long track, the U.S. will go home empty-handed for the third time in history after both men's and women's relay teams failed to advance out of their respective quarterfinals.

Before the big hockey win, Canada grabbed two gold medals for the men's curling team, which won its third straight gold 9-3 over Great Britain, and for Marielle Thompson in ski cross. Canadian Kelsey Serwa finished second behind Thompson, with Swede Anna Holmlund third.
Sweden took the men's curling bronze 6-4 over China.
