NEWS LEGEND DIES

Broadcasting pioneer Howard K. Smith died of pneumonia Friday at his home in Bethesda, Md. He was 87. In 1946, Smith succeeded Edward R. Murrow as CBS's London correspondent. He later moved on to ABC News, where he co-anchored The ABC Evening News.
