Netflix Signs Deal with DreamWorks to Air New Animated Shows

Netflix will begin airing original animated series based on DreamWorks Animation characters next year thanks to a new deal signed between the streaming service and the animation studio.

The agreement, which was announced Monday, provides for more than 300 hours of original animated content, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new shows will be based on new and existing DreamWorks Animation characters (i.e. Shrek, Kung Fu Panda), as well as characters from Classic Media, which DreamWorks Animation purchased last year (i.e. Lassie, Frosty the Snowman).

Netflix is expected to start airing the DreamWorks Animation shows exclusively in 2014, THR reports.

"This is an unprecedented commitment to original content in the Internet television space," DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said in a statement. "Netflix is a visionary company that continues to redefine the way audiences watch television, and it is a thrill to add to their growing momentum."

Netflix and DWA have also partnered for the upcoming original children's series Turbo F.A.S.T, based on the summer animated film Turbo. The series, about a racing snail, is set to premiere on Netflix in December.
