The Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week -- She's Gotta Have It, Rim of the World

Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of May 24-May 30.

It's a little quieter than you'd expect a holiday weekend to be on Netflix. There are no major major releases, and the best thing is the second season of the underrated Spike Lee dramedy She's Gotta Have It. There are a couple of fairly big movies, Rim of the World and The Perfection, but neither are particularly good. And the week's biggest drama series release, What/If, is a flop. Beyond that, there are some international movies and shows and a Jeff Ross roast series, which is always a good time if you're into that sort of thing.

The Biggest Releases

What/If, Season 1
This is one of those cases where "biggest" doesn't necessarily mean "best." Netflix doesn't have a lot of A+ shows, but it doesn't have a lot of Fs, either. What/If is a rare total failure. It stars Jane Levy as a startup founder who gets an offer from a cruel venture capitalist (Renée Zellweger): She'll fund her company in exchange for a night with her husband (Blake Jenner). If you're thinking "that's Indecent Proposal," you're right! And the show knows it. But Adrian Lyne's movie was a sexy erotic thriller, while What/If is neither sexy nor erotic nor thrilling. Watch at your own risk.

Rim of the World
It's Stranger Things meets Independence Day. You need more than that? OK. Four 13-year-olds have to save the world from an alien invasion. It's directed by McG, a man who knows dumb fun. It's proudly unoriginal -- even the trailer uses that bass drop sound effect and Inception horn blasts -- but maybe kids will like it. (Trailer)

She's Gotta Have It, Season 2
Spike Lee's TV joint is back for a second season that expands Nola Darling's (DeWanda Wise) universe a little bit bigger -- there's a world beyond Fort Greene, Brooklyn, it turns out! Nola's three men are on the backburner, as she has chosen to be with Opal (Ilfanesh Hadera), but all is not well in that relationship, nor is all well with her art or her friendships. She's a work in progress! The good news is Mars Blackmon (Anthony Ramos) is back, and he's not taking his Jordans off for anyone. (Trailer)

Everything Else

The Perfection
Who would have predicted, back in the heyday of Girls, that Allison Williams was going to become a scream queen? The erstwhile Marnie does her Get Out thing in this twisty, gory, kinda unhinged thriller flick. Williams plays a former cello phenom who gets very close to classical music's new rising star (Dear White People's Logan Browning), and then things get real crazy. The trailer above will give you sense of some of the vibe you're in for. The title is probably even more ironic than the producers wanted it to be, because it's extremely imperfect!

After Maria
This documentary follows three Puerto Rican women as they try to pick up the pieces after they and their families are displaced by Hurricane Maria. It's a heartbreaking documentation of how the government has failed Puerto Rico in the aftermath of the devastating storm. (Trailer)

Alta Mar (High Seas), Season 1
This swoony Spanish series is basically Clue on a cruise ship in the 1940s. Someone falls overboard, and every one of the glamorous characters onboard is a suspect. Whodunit?!?!?! Tune in to find out! (Trailer)

Joy
This gritty slice of life drama follows a Nigerian woman working as a prostitute in Vienna, trying to support her family back home and her toddler daughter. It's an unflinching look at a vividly drawn, unrelentingly bleak corner of the world. (Trailer)

Historical Roasts with Jeff Ross
Roastmaster General Jeff Ross is back with a new gimmick: comics in character as historical figures tell roast jokes. For example, Gilbert Gottfried as Hitler. It'll always be "too soon!" (Monday, May 27 / Trailer)

Outlander, Seasons 1 and 2
We don't usually include non-Netflix originals in these roundups, but we gotta make an exception for this one, since this Starz sensation coming to Netflix for the first time means a whole bunch more people are gonna join the fandom as they discover the bodice-ripping tale of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan). Chopsticks
An under-confident young woman goes on a life-changing journey when she enlists a handsome con man to help her recover her stolen car from a goat-loving gangster in this quirky comedy from India. (Thursday, May 30 / Trailer)

Svaha: The Sixth Finger
A cult investigator finds there's something definitely weird about this new group -- something paranormal. A worthy addition to Netflix's pretty expansive library of Korean thrillers. (Thursday, May 30 / Trailer)
